just got through designing and building a cottage in Highlands, NC. Some see it and say it looks like an old English Cotwold cottage, some a Harry Potter house :, some a gnome home. We call it Allwynd. Every English Cottage has to have a name, right? We live on a ridge line, facing north and truly Allwynd lives up to its name. We told the architect to plan it small enough that we could put only the best materials into it--all stone and brick, slate roof, and metal clad windows. Highlands is one of only two places in the USA that is termed a rain forest--78 inches per year. We built this for our future grandchildren and we didn't want them to have to repair something every time they came up. Originally, we planned this to be the quest house, but after it's completion we realized there wan no way we were going to let it stand empty most of the year. Our plans now are to build a 'bunk' house with two more bedrooms and a large gathering room with an efficiency kitchen. Hope you enjoy our home.
